When we decided that we wanted a detached house, there were many cities and towns in Ontario that Colleen and I could have picked from. However, we crossed off most of them because either the housing was too expensive, they were too far away from our grown children or they lacked amenities.
Why Sudbury?
Here are a few reasons why we chose Sudbury:
• We have three grown children in Toronto and one in Sudbury. We wanted to stay accessible to all four.
• Our only grandchild lives in Sudbury.
An air ambulance lands on top of Health Sciences North, the new name for the Sudbury Regional Hospital.
• As we age, we may develop health issues so we wanted to be in a community that has a teaching hospital. (They have more specialists and are better equipped. This is very important and is the main reason we did not consider most other Ontario cities.)
• By staying in Ontario, we kept our OHIP coverage and our Toronto-based medical
specialists.
• Sudbury has fibre-optic Internet service.
• Compared to the GTA, the starting asking prices for detached houses are far lower.
• Our condo fees were $1,230 a month. We could see them rising to $1,300 a month by 2023. The operating expenses for our new house in Sudbury are far less.
• We both retired in December 2020 so we did not have to stay in Toronto.
• Everything we want is within a fifteen-minute drive from our home.
• Sudbury has all the shopping we need and has almost all the big chain stores.
• Sudbury has excellent independent fast food outlets, great ethnic restaurants and
high-end coffee shops.
• Everything, from supermarkets, the hospital, libraries, a university, the downtown
bars, public parks and even ice fishing is within a 10-minute drive from our home.
• We found a family doctor, a dentist and a veterinarian. within our first three months.
• We kept our Toronto phone numbers.
• We live in a very lovely neighbourhood. Each house is unique. No cookie cutter
houses here.
• For our family and friends, we are now a weekend destination not just a visit to a
condo apartment. We have two guest bedrooms; a gas BBQ, a fire pit and a large
fenced back yard.
• one teenager who visits, is in love with Bay Used Books. It is a must destination
during every visit. (Used bookstores are getting rare in Toronto.)
How is it working out?
After living in Sudbury since the start of 2021, we are very pleased that we moved here. I would not be surprised if more seniors decided to move up north to
Greater Sudbury.
