The search for a happy Lesser Sudburian
The City of Greater Sudbury (CGS) was officially created on 01 January 2001, when the province consolidated several municipalities. For Sudbury, that resulted in seven towns and one city joining together to create the City of Greater Sudbury.
When you compare Greater Sudbury to the province of Prince Edward Island, you find a couple of similarities:
Size:
PEI: 5,660 KM²
CGS: 3,228 KM²
Population
PEI: 156,947
CGS: 164,926
Greater Sudbury is 60% the size of PEI and has 8,000 more people.
The expanded city contains Lake Wanapitei, at 13,257 hectares, it is the largest city-contained lake in the world.
The Northern Ontario Railroad Museum & Heritage Centre is located in Capreol.
Onaping Falls, just northwest of Dowling is a famous scenic attraction.
It needs to be noted that half of Greater Sudbury’s population lives outside the old city of Sudbury. Despite their numbers, they are convinced that the politicians at city hall ignores their needs and that the small communities that make up Lesser Sudbury were far better off when they were independent.
A new expedition
Throughout human history, there have been long, romantic, but futile searches undertaken by explorers, kings, adventurers, police agencies, scoundrels, historians and scientists who were left exhausted, ill, destitute and heartbroken by their attempts.
These searches include all searches that attempted to find:
• Plato’s Utopia.
• Cleopatra and Mark Antony’s tomb.
• The Holy Grail.
• The Fountain of Youth.
• Amelia Earhart.
• Jimmy Hoffa’s grave.
• Noah's Ark.
To this long list, I hope that in 2024 a new enterprise will be undertaken by a determined group of skilled experts in the fields of exploration and science; that will travel by land and water, for a period of time no shorter than two years, in a search that hopefully will be successful.
It is the hunt to find anyone who has lived in the in Greater Sudbury’s outer communities since amalgamation—and is in sound mind—who believes that this arranged wedding has benefitted their community.
