Cortina Pizza on Paris Street has closed
The Paris Street location in 2022.
The founder of Cortina Pizza, moved to Canada from Italy with only a quarter in his pocket. In 1964 he had enough money to open the first Cortina Pizza location. It was the first take-out and delivery restaurant in the City of Sudbury.
They introduced the famous Kitchen Sink Pizza and the legendary Meatball Sandwich.
Only the street sign remains in place.
By the 1980s, there were 22 Cortina Pizza locations in the province. Many were sitdown restaurants. The only locations to survive were the ones that did not turn into full-fledged restaurants.
The Paris Street store-front sign has been reversed to show a blank white sign.
If you look close, to can make out the reversed letter on the original sign.
The Lorne Street and the Barrydowne Road locations are doing well and will remain in business. A number of the Paris Street customers are now ordering their pizzas from the Lorne Street location.
A look inside the store shows that most of the restaurant fixtures are gone. An employee at the Lorne Street location told me that this location will not re-open.
The takeout menus will need to be updated.
